Responsible Officer Training

Introduction

The Responsible Officer Course is approved by the SafeWork SA Advisory Committee.

The OHS&W Act of South Australia requires every 'body corporate' (ie. Registered Body or Association, Pty Ltd, Ltd or Incorporated Company) to nominate a Responsible Officer.

In general terms the "responsible officer" makes sure that a body corporate complies with its obligations under the Act. The most senior person in a body corporate, who lives in SA, usually holds the responsible officer position.

The responsible officer has a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining a workplace culture that promotes occupational health and safety (OHS).

The course is made up of three units, each comprising several elements:

SWSAACRO07/01         Role of the Responsible Officer
SWSAACRO07/02         Legislative Framework
SWSAACRO07/03         Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems

The course aims to help responsible officers ensure their organisations comply with requirements of the Act.

It is expected that participants will gain knowledge and an understanding of the employer's responsibilities of occupational health and safety. Employee and employer attitudes to OHS and workplace culture are also explored, as is the consideration of approaches that can be used to address and overcome barriers.

Persons who need to undertake Responsible Officer training are those who:

  • Are from a body corporate
  • Engage paid employees or volunteers
  • Are appointed Responsible Officer/s but have not yet attended Responsible Officer training
  • Attended Responsible Officer training prior to 1 January 2003
